Some codes require that shims be used under penetrameters to compensate for thickness of a backing ring or weld reinforcement. Shims are supplied in the same materials as penetrameters. They are available in sizes 0.005” thru 1″ thick. Material and size identification indicating actual thickness is marked on each shim.
Shims are ordered individually. You specify a specific thickness up to three decimal places within the ranges listed below.

Shims are 3/4″ x 2″ x T. These dimensions allow at least 1/8″ clearance on each side of the penetrameter when used with ASTM-E-1025. They are not to be used for applications requiring conformance to ASTM-E-1742. You cannot use ASTM-E-1742 Penetrameters with a Shim, as shims are not long enough to meet the 1/8” clearance requirement.
